Butterfly Dance is a beautiful spring-themed die set from the Spellbinders’ Stitching Die of the Month – January, filled with movement, texture, and delicate detail. For this card, I paired the stitched butterfly with the 3-D Embossing Folder of the Month to create a soft, dimensional background that lets the focal elements shine. From stitched wings to layered florals and foiled sentiments, this project is all about combining texture, color, and thoughtful assembly to create a card that feels special—just because.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Create the Background Panel

Die cut the cloud edging die (included in the Stitching Die of the Month) from ColorWheel cardstock in Breeze and White. Fit the pieces together, trim to A2 size, tape on the back to secure, and run the panel through the 3D Embossing Folder of the Month. The striped, textured design includes a large floral motif, which is perfectly sized to create a horizontal striped border while excluding the flower area.

  2. Highlight the Texture

Lightly apply white pigment ink over the raised horizontal stripes on the blue portion of the embossed panel to enhance the texture and add subtle contrast.

  3. Assemble the Butterfly

Die cut the butterfly base from black cardstock and the detailed wing pieces from Beeswax cardstock. Before assembling, stitch the yellow detail pieces with black embroidery floss. To secure the stitching, apply Tombow adhesive to the back of each stitched piece, making sure to catch all the threads. Set aside to dry until tacky, then press the pieces firmly into place. This step both secures the stitches and ensures excellent adhesion.

  1. Die Cut and Assemble the Florals

Die cut the coneflowers from Mulberry cardstock with black cardstock centres. Cut the stems and leaves from Fern cardstock.

Adhere the stems and greenery flat to the card front. Pop the flower heads up with foam squares for added dimension.

  2. Add Dimension to the Butterfly

Adhere the butterfly to the upper portion of the card using foam squares, allowing it to float above the background.

  3. Finish with the Sentiment

Foil the sentiment (from the Press & Foil Plate of the Month) onto Mulberry cardstock using gold foil. Trim and adhere it over the flower stems with small foam squares for a polished, layered finish.

Other Uses for the Butterfly Dance Die Set

  • Monochromatic elegance: Try cutting the butterfly entirely from white or cream cardstock and highlight the stitching with metallic or pastel thread.

  • Mixed media projects: Use the butterfly as a focal point on art journal pages or framed home décor pieces.

  • Seasonal cards: Change up the colors for summer brights, autumn neutrals, or even winter whites with silver stitching.

  • Scrapbooking accents: The stitched butterfly works beautifully as a dimensional embellishment on spring or garden-themed layouts.

  • Mini cards & tags: Scale the design down by using just the butterfly or individual florals for gift tags or note cards.

Closing Thoughts

Butterfly Dance is one of those die sets that invites creativity, whether you love stitching, layering, or experimenting with texture. Paired with this month’s 3-D embossing folder and press-and-foil sentiment, it comes together into a card that feels fresh, dimensional, and perfect for spring. With so many ways to adapt the butterfly and florals, this set is sure to become a go-to for cards and projects all year long.
