Spellbinders 3D Embossing Folder of the Month, Patchwork, has a warm country vibe. With its woven plaid design, it’s the perfect background for cozy Autumn cards. Today’s project pairs this richly textured background with playful squirrels, leaves, and acorns from the Small Die of the Month to create a layered and festive Fall scene.

Step 1: Embossed Background

Begin with a panel of white cardstock and emboss it with the 3D Embossing Folder of the Month. Use Post-It Note Tape to mask off individual plaid patches and blend them with Distress Oxide inks:

  • Abandoned Coral

  • Dried Marigold

  • Ripe Persimmon

  • Picked Raspberry

Once the panel is fully inked, lightly rub Walnut Stain ink over the surface. This catches the raised texture and adds depth to the plaid design.

Step 2: Die-Cut Elements

Using the Small Die of the Month, cut squirrels from Truffle and Fawn cardstock. Die cut leaves from Chiffon cardstock and blend them with Ripe Persimmon and Walnut Stain for Autumn warmth. Add acorns in coordinating brown tones to complete the woodland look.

Step 3: Frame & Card Assembly

Create a scallop frame using the Bow & Bell Scallop Frame die set. Cut it from Truffle cardstock and back it with a layer of black foam for dimension. Adhere the frame over the embossed background panel, then attach the entire piece to an A2 black card base.

Step 4: Embellishments & Sentiment

Arrange the squirrels, acorns, and leaves across the lower half of the card, letting some overlap the frame for a playful feel. Add a sentiment strip that reads “Fall From All of Us” included in the Large Die of the Month. Scatter Nuvo Crystal Drops in English Mustard or a a similar colour round the scene for cheerful pops of colour.

Finished Card

The textured plaid background, autumn colors, and layered die cuts come together for a playful, dimensional Fall card that’s perfect for sending seasonal greetings. The combination of embossing, ink blending, and die cut critters makes this project both fun to create and joyful to share.

✨ Tip: Try using cooler ink tones (like greens and blues) for a winter plaid background—you’ll get a whole new look with the same embossing folder!
