There’s something extra special about handmade holiday cards—they carry not only a message but also the love and care of the maker. Today, I’m sharing a Thanksgiving card tutorial featuring the Spellbinders Large Die of the Month  for September, Acorn Acres. This set is full of Autumn charm with its whimsical acorn house, detailed leaves, and sweet little squirrel.

If you’re looking for a fun seasonal project, this one’s a perfect way to play with inks, textures, and layers! To view the VIDEO TUTORIAL click HERE.

Step 1: Create the Background

Start with a piece of Seaside cardstock for the background. To give it depth, lightly blend the edges with Distress Oxide inks in Iced Spruce and Faded Jeans. This creates a soft, dusky sky that makes the warm autumn colours pop.

Step 2: Build the Foreground

Cut a rolling hill using a Landscape Edges die from Fawn cardstock. To add richness, ink blend with Walnut Stain Distress Oxide, focusing more heavily around the edges. Adhere this to the base of your background panel.

Step 3: Die Cut and Ink the Leaves

Cut several leaves from Kraft cardstock using the die set. Blend each with autumn shades:

  • Walnut Stain for earthy depth

  • Fossilized Amber for golden tones

  • Spiced Marmalade for vibrant orange

  • Fired Brick for warm reds

They will be used to frame the Acorn House.

Step 4: Assemble the Acorn House

Die cut the adorable acorn house and ink the edges lightly for dimension. For added sparkle, use glitter cardstock accents on the roof and doorframe. Pop the house up with foam tape on the center of your card front and nestle the leaves and sunflowers around it.

Step 5: Add the Squirrel and Sentiment

No Fall card is complete without a little woodland friend! Die cut the squirrel and acorn, shading them slightly with inks to bring out detail. Pop up the squirrel with small foam squares near the acorn house. Finally, add the “Thanksgiving” sentiment on a banner strip also popped up with a foam die cut for the finishing touch.
