There is something about soft tropical colours mixed with texture and stitching that creates such a beautiful, relaxed feel. This card featuring the Spellbinders Stitching Die of the Month, Luau Beats, was such a fun project to create! I leaned into a soft, airy palette with delicate stitching details, embossed vellum, and touches of gold for a tropical-inspired design with a more elegant feel.

Card Details

I began by die cutting all of the elements including the hand drum, guitar, flowers, and leaves from Colorwheel Cardstock. Wanting to create a soft tropical look, I chose Blush, Chiffon , Ivory, muted grey-greens, and added small pops of gold foil for warmth and shine.

Only a few elements required stitching — the large leaves, drum, and guitar. The leaves were stitched using a darker green embroidery floss to add contrast and definition, while soft pink floss was used on both the drum and guitar for subtle texture. Once the stitching was completed, all of the elements were assembled.

For the sentiment, I used the Aloha die from the Large Die of the Month , cutting it from Chiffon cardstock to keep the soft monochromatic feel.

Now for my favourite part — the background! I adhered a panel of blush cardstock to an A2 card base and embossed vellum using the Island Beats 3D Embossing Folder of the Month. One of the coolest things about embossing vellum is how the pressure turns the raised areas white, creating gorgeous soft contrast and texture.

Working with vellum can be tricky since liquid adhesive often shows through and wrinkles it, so I built the entire arrangement directly onto the embossed vellum panel first using foam squares. Since vellum is translucent, I could flip the panel over and easily see where the elements were placed. This allowed me to strategically place double-sided tape behind the hidden areas before adhering everything to the card front.

To finish the card, I assembled the three-piece Aloha sentiment and lightly tacked the letters together (it comes in three die cuts) before adhering only the upper centre portions of the letters to the drum, creating a fun floating effect.

Closing Thoughts

This card turned out exactly how I imagined — soft, tropical, textured, and full of dimension. The combination of stitching, embossed vellum, and layered die cuts creates so much interest while still maintaining a clean and airy look. Sometimes softer colour palettes are the perfect way to give tropical themes an entirely different feel, and I absolutely love how this one came together!
