Spellbinders Stencil of the Month – August 2026 | Peek-A-Boo

Halloween crafting is one of my favourite times of the year, and the Spellbinders August Stencil of the Month, Peek-A-Boo, makes creating spooky backgrounds incredibly easy! This five-piece layering stencil creates an amazing negative-space design where adorable little ghosts magically appear as you stencil the pumpkins. It’s a clever design that comes together quickly, but the biggest tip is to start with white cardstock so the hidden ghosts really stand out.

Card Details

I began with an A2-sized panel of white cardstock measuring 4¼” x 5½”. I always stencil on a sticky mat to keep everything securely in place while blending. Using the registration marks on each stencil, I aligned the layers in the corners of the panel and secured them with low-tack tape before blending.

For the background sky, I wanted a dark, spooky night, so I blended Black Soot and Villainous Potion Distress Oxide Inks, allowing the colours to fade softly into one another.

The three larger pumpkins were ink blended with Carved Pumpkin and Black Soot Distress Oxide Ink to add depth and shading. The remaining pumpkins were coloured with Peacock Feathers and Black Soot, creating a fun pop of unexpected Halloween colour. The pumpkin stems were blended with Peeled Paint Distress Oxide Ink.

The final stencil adds the pumpkin faces, bats and ghosts’ eyes using Black Soot Distress Oxide Ink. To finish the background, I splattered the panel with Splatter White for a starry nighttime effect before adhering it to an A2-sized black cardstock card base.

The Clear Stamp & Die of the Month coordinates beautifully with this stencil set and is filled with fun, slightly snarky Halloween sentiments. I chose “The Spirits Made Me Do It”, stamped it onto white cardstock with black ink, and used the coordinating die to cut it out along with black foam. The stacked sentiment was adhered to the centre of the card to complete the design.

I love how the sweet little ghosts appear through the negative space of the pumpkins, adding a playful surprise to the finished card.
