April’s Press & Foil of the Month from Spellbinders—Seed Co. Border—is such a charming and versatile set! Designed to create a vintage-style seed packet, it’s perfect for Spring projects. I decided to take it one step further and turn it into a flat shaker card, adding a fun interactive element while keeping the design sleek and mailable.

Card Details

I started by letterpressing Beeswax Colorwheel Cardstock using black BetterPress ink to create the seed packet design. Once pressed, I used a rectangle nesting die to cut out the centre window. The delicate details in the border were colored with Copic markers in shades of green, orange, and yellow to bring the design to life.

For the flat shaker, I created a custom acetate pocket using heavyweight acetate trimmed to 6” x 4 ¾”. Each side was scored at ¼”, and the corners were trimmed diagonally to form tabs. Double-sided tape was applied to the tabs, and after folding three sides, I inserted an A2 panel of kraft cardstock as the backing. Once sealed, I filled the pocket with a mix of gold microbeads and small black iridescent sequins before closing the final edge.

The pressed seed packet panel was adhered over the shaker using a thin, even layer of liquid adhesive. I made sure the shaker elements were evenly distributed before placing a weight on top to dry flat. When dry, the flat shake, her cart front was adhered to an A2 sized, craft card base.

To decorate, I added pansies and plant markers from the Small Die of the Month. The flowers were die cut from Violet, Beeswax, Fern, and Mulberry cardstock, while the plant markers were cut from kraft and lightly inked with Walnut Stain Distress Oxide for a vintage touch. One marker was adhered flat, and the second was popped up with foam, slightly overlapping for dimension. The pansies were adhered with foam squares.

The sentiment, also from the Press & Foil of the Month, was letterpressed in black on Beeswax cardstock, die cut with its coordinating die, and stacked with black foam for a clean, dimensional finish. It was placed right over the shaker window to tie everything together.

Final Thoughts

This flat shaker design is such a fun twist on a classic seed packet card—interactive, but still easy to mail! I love how the mix of textures, soft florals, and vintage details all come together. It’s a perfect spring project and a great way to stretch the versatility of this month’s kit.
