The Spellbinders 3D Embossing Folder of the Month, Cottage Wall, is a beautifully versatile design that offers many creative possibilities. Measuring 8½″ × 5½″, this folder allows you to feature the detailed floral as a striking focal point or rotate your cardstock to use only the softly textured stripes for a subtle background. For this card, I leaned into both texture and color by combining embossing with watercolor techniques, creating a soft, painterly look that highlights the depth and dimension of this stunning folder.

Step-by-Step Instructions
Emboss the Panel
Begin by embossing a panel of Canson XL watercolor paper using the Cottage Wall, the 3D Embossing Folder of the Month. Run it through your die-cutting machine.
Create the Soft Background
Liberally coat the striped background area with clean water. Using Mijello Gold watercolor paints, drop in a soft rose-pink color and allow the pigment to flow naturally across the surface. Set the panel aside and let it dry completely.
Paint the Floral Design
Once dry, paint the flower petals using tones of pink and burgundy, and the leaves with soft greens. Work one petal or leaf at a time, allowing each section to dry before painting an adjacent area. This prevents colors from bleeding together and helps maintain definition within the embossed details. The panel was splattered using a fan brush to apply Splatter White.

Re-Emboss for Definition
After the painting is fully dry, carefully realign the panel inside the embossing folder and run it through your die-cutting machine a second time. This step restores texture and brings the embossed details back into focus.
Assemble the Card
Trim the finished panel and adhere it to an A2-sized card base.
Add the Sentiment
Stamp the sentiment from the Clear Stamp & Die of the Month onto Colorwheel Blush cardstock and cut it out using the coordinating die. Cut the same die shape from black sheet foam, stack the layers together, and adhere the sentiment to the card front for added dimension.
Closing Thoughts
This technique beautifully showcases how embossing and watercolor can work together to create soft texture and depth, while still allowing the details of the design to shine. The Cottage Wall 3D Embossing Folder is perfect for elegant florals, subtle backgrounds, and mixed-media approaches, making it a wonderful addition to any cardmaker’s collection. Whether you highlight the floral or keep things simple with the striped texture, this folder offers endless creative flexibility.
