Stencilling with Gilding Flakes featuring Spellbinder’s Layered Merry Christmas Foliage

Updated: Nov 15, 2023

Hello, friends! I thought I would try something a little different for a stencilling medium for Spellbinder's Layered Merry Christmas Foliage Stencil and Die. Gilding flakes have a very extravagant look that is further enhanced on a dark background. Lots of glitz but I felt I could get away with it because it is a Christmas card! This super shiny card was fun to make but, I won't lie, a little hand vac will be your best friend! Gilding flakes are super light and have a way of escaping everywhere!

  • I used Gilding Glue which is a slow drying adhesive. The glue was applied to the stencils with a flexible spatula, It will go on white and dry to clear.

  • When the adhesive is clear, the gilding flakes are applied. I apply just a few at a time in one corner and burnish it with my finger. The excess is knocked off onto a coffee filter if you want to try to retain the extra. I ended up using my garbage can in favour of a cleaner work surface! I then continue this process for the other three quadrants. When completed, I used a microfibre cloth to do the final burnishing and clean the panel.

  • I worked with Cosmic Shimmer Flakes. Stencil 1 was gilded with Copper Teal Cosmic Shimmer Gilding Flakes, Stencil 2 with Warm Sunrise Cosmic Shimmer Gilding Flakes and Stencil 3 with Silver Dream Cosmic Shimmer Gilding Flakes.

  • Both the sentiment and black foam were cut with the sentiment outline die included in Spellbinder's Layered Merry Christmas Foliage Stencil and Die.

  • The panel was trimmed to 4" by 5 1/4" and adhered to a black A2 sized card base matted with mirror gold card stock.

  • The stacked sentiment was adhered to the card in the design opening.

  • Iridescent pearls were used to embellish the card.
