This spring-inspired shaped card showcases the Spellbinders Small Die of the Month – Sunny Stems, a cheerful and versatile die set perfect for creating fresh florals and playful card bases. By using the flower outline die to form the card shape itself, this design highlights how easily Sunny Stems can move beyond traditional layering and become the focal point of an interactive, dimensional project.

Card Details

Cream-colored cardstock was used to create the shaped card base. The cardstock was folded in half, and the flower outline die was positioned slightly over the crease before die cutting, creating a hinged card base. Because this technique leaves the top edge slightly incomplete, an additional flower outline was die cut and adhered on top to create a clean, finished silhouette.

The flower outline die and coordinating flower detail die were taped together and run through the die-cutting machine using Colorwheel Violet cardstock. This piece was carefully aligned and adhered to the shaped card base. The flower detail die was also used to cut Lavender cardstock, and the petal pieces were inlaid into the violet outline for added color contrast and dimension.

Sentiments & Embellishing

The sentiments for this card come from the Clear Stamp & Die of the Month. The secondary sentiment was stamped directly onto the shaped card base, fitting perfectly within the flower center. The main sentiment was stamped onto Mint cardstock, die cut with the coordinating die, and stacked with black sheet foam for dimension before adhering to the card front.

This die set also includes several small floral elements, which were used to embellish the design. The flowers, leaves, and stems were cut from a mix of Colorwheel Cardstock in Violet, Lavender, Fairy Tale, Chiffon, Beeswax, and Mint. Once assembled, the florals were adhered with Foam Squares, tucking the sentiment naturally among the stems for a cohesive, layered look. Finishing touches were added with purple opalescent sequins finished off with Nuvo Crystal Drops Morning Dew.

Other Ways to Use the Sunny Stems Die Set

  • Create flat floral clusters for A2 or slimline cards by layering the blooms without shaping the card base.

  • Use the flower outline die as a window or shaker frame for interactive designs.

  • Mix and match the stems and flowers to build bouquets for birthdays, thank-you cards, or Mother’s Day projects.

  • Cut the elements from specialty cardstock such as vellum, glitter, or metallics for added texture and interest.

  • Use the individual blooms as envelope seals, tags, or scrapbook embellishments.

Closing Remarks

Small Die of the Month  – Sunny Stems is a wonderfully adaptable die set that encourages creativity, whether you’re crafting bold shaped cards or delicate floral accents. With its mix of outlines, detailed layers, and smaller embellishments, this set makes it easy to design projects that feel fresh, cheerful, and perfectly suited for spring and beyond.
