Tropical florals always make a statement, and the June Spellbinders Press & Foil of the Month, Hibiscus Blooms, is no exception. This gorgeous BetterPress plate features beautifully detailed hibiscus blooms along with a coordinating die that cuts one side of the image and an elegant script sentiment. For this card, I kept the design soft and airy with delicate watercolouring, allowing the intricate details of the pressed image to shine.

Card Details

I began by pressing the hibiscus image onto a BetterPress Porcelain panel using BetterPress Ink in Garnet for the flower and Cruise for the leaves and stem. The crisp impression created the perfect foundation for some simple watercolouring with Sennelier paints.

Using a wet-on-wet technique, I applied clean water to individual petals and leaves before dropping in colour. This allowed the pigments to softly blend and flow, creating beautiful variation while maintaining a light, delicate look. Working one section at a time helped keep the colors controlled and prevented them from becoming muddy.

Once the watercolouring was dry, I added detail to the flower center by colouring the stamen with a Copic 110 marker. For the finer details, I used a Sharpie gel pen.

The coordinating die was then aligned along one side of the floral image to create the decorative cut edge. This partial die-cutting adds interest and helps the bloom stand out from the background.

To create the card front, I mounted the floral panel onto an A2-sized panel of Colorwheel Cardstock in Waterfall. Before pressing the sentiment, I used the magnetic BetterPress System to help with placement. By positioning the floral panel face down on the platform, I was able to align the script sentiment exactly where I wanted it before pressing it with BetterPress Black Ink.

The completed floral panel was then adhered to the Waterfall background panel and mounted onto an A2-sized card base.

Closing Thoughts

The Hibiscus Blooms Press & Foil of the Month is a beautiful example of how a detailed BetterPress image can shine with simple colouring techniques. The combination of crisp letterpress details, soft watercoloring, and the elegant partial die-cut edge creates a card that feels both sophisticated and effortless. Whether used for pressing or foiling, this versatile set is perfect for creating stunning floral cards for a variety of occasions.
