Spellbinders Midnight Mischief: Spooky Letterpress Designs for Halloween

The Spellbinders Midnight Mischief Collection is pretty easy to figure out what this one is all about… Halloween! 🎃 Today, I’m sharing two spooky cards featuring the Ghoulish Greetings and Winged Shadows Press & Foil Plates, along with two fabulous nesting die sets that make creating polished card fronts a breeze. I’ve gone with a wonderfully spooky palette of Rainforest, Fog, Violet and Black from Colour Wheel Cardstock, with a little splattering thrown in for good measure!

Card Details

I chose to letterpress both of the Press & Foil Plates—Ghoulish Greetings and Winged Shadows—using the Spellbinders BetterPress System and BetterPress Black Ink. One image was pressed onto Rainforest Colorwheel Cardstock, while the other was pressed onto Fog Colorwheel Cardstock.

Before pressing the plates, I inked the edges of both panels with Black Soot Distress Oxide Ink to give them a shadowy, spooky appearance. The plates include coordinating sentiments, so I pressed the sentiments along with the main images. The only exception was the additional sentiment on the Fog card, which I pressed separately onto Anchor Colorwheel Cardstock. This sentiment, along with a layer of black sheet foam, was cut using its coordinating die and then stacked for added dimension.

Once the letterpressing was complete, I masked the sentiments on both panels with Post-it Note tape. Then came the fun part—the splattering! I watered down a little Splatter White and black acrylic paint and applied both using a fan brush. The tiny speckles add just the right amount of Halloween grunge and make the backgrounds feel wonderfully atmospheric.

For the Rainforest card, I die cut the pressed panel using one of the dies from the Colour Block Accent Rectangles set. The finished panel was then adhered to an A2-sized black card base. The bright green cardstock combined with the black bats creates a wonderfully eerie Halloween background.

For the Fog card, I die cut the letterpressed panel using one of the dies from the Precision Layering A2 set. I also cut a piece of black sheet foam with the same die and stacked the two layers together for a dimensional, framed look. The panel was then adhered to a Violet layer cut with the Colour Block Accent Rectangles and mounted onto an A2-sized black card base. Finally, the additional Anchor sentiment was popped up along the bottom of the card.

Closing Thoughts

I love how dramatically different these two cards feel even though they use the same collection and similar techniques. The Rainforest card is bold and wonderfully creepy, while the Fog, Violet and Black combination on the second card has a slightly more classic Halloween feel. The Press & Foil Plates make it so easy to create detailed focal points, and the nesting dies add that finishing touch that makes the cards look beautifully polished.

A little Distress Oxide ink, some splattering and a few layers of cardstock and foam are all it takes to turn these designs into some serious Halloween mischief! 👻🦇
