Spellbinders Checkmate collection is so adorable! I love that you can create both chess and checkers themed cards with this release, and the classic gameboard design paired with glittery accents makes for such a fun and eye-catching project.

I began with the Layered Harlequin Stencil Set. This is a five-piece stencil set; four of the stencils create the game board while the fifth stencil creates soft shadows for the chess pieces. I used a combination of Distress Oxide inks in Iced Spruce and Peacock Feathers to create the harlequin design. Stencils one and two were blended with the same colour, followed by stencils three and four in the alternating colour to build the layered pattern.

The Chess & Checkers Die Set includes everything needed to create all of the game pieces for both games. I created two of the pieces using Colorwheel Cardstock in Windy paired with silver glitter cardstock. The remaining chess pieces were created with Colorwheel Cardstock in Anchor along with a coordinating specialty glitter paper for added sparkle and contrast.

The fifth stencil was then used to create shadows for the pieces. Once I decided where the chess pieces would sit on the board, I angled them slightly to the right and blended Iced Spruce ink through the stencil to ground them and add dimension. The chess pieces were then popped up with foam squares for extra depth.

The card was finished with a banner from the Unbelievably Awesome Banner set. The sentiment was stamped onto Windy cardstock and cut with the coordinating die along with a layer of white foam sheet for dimension. I trimmed away a portion of the foam so the banner could nestle perfectly over one of the chess pieces.

I love how this card combines playful design with elegant details. The layered stencil background, sparkling game pieces, and dimensional sentiment all come together for a project that would be perfect for game lovers of any age!
