Spellbinder’s BetterPress Plate of the Month for May

Updated: May 11

Hello friends! Spellbinder's BetterPress Plate of the Month, Wild and Free, is a lush and beautiful tropical composition. I have coloured it using a combination of water colours for the images and a Copic marker on the background.

The May registration window for this club will be available May 6 for current Club Members. New registrations are accepted on the 10th of May. Registrations can be completed until May 27th or while supplies last.

  • The BetterPress Plate of the Month, image and sentiment together, were letterpressed on Porcelain BetterPress A2 Cotton Card Panels. I used the new Full Size Black BetterPress Ink Pad. This is a slow drying ink, so of course the small ink pads work equally as well but the large pad on this A2 sized image makes for a quick and easy application of ink.

  • The background was coloured first with Copic B39. I wasn’t sure how the marker would work on the cotton panel. It applied evenly but I was careful working around the images not to apply pressure because the ink would bleed. Rather I simply went around the image outlines just touching the nib to paper.

  • With the background coloured, the images were easier to discern. They were water coloured with Mijello Mission Gold. To keep the colours soft, I used a ‘wet on wet’ technique. An area is first coated lightly with water followed by the wet paint.

  • The panel was trimmed to 4” by 5 1/4” and adhered to a black matted, A2 sized card base.
