Faux Watercolour with Alex Syberia Designs’ Morning Flower

Updated: Jul 1, 2022

Hello everyone! Do you love the look of watercolour but are intimidated to give it a go? Water colour real brush pens are easy to use and a beginner can achieve a beautiful, faux painterly result! I am working with a gorgeous digital image by Alex Syberia Designs, Morning Flower. The open design of the flower is perfect for water colouring!

The image was printed on Bristol Smooth card stock. This card stock is a good choice for water colour pens. It can withstand a small amount of water and it easy to achieve a blend or gradient. It is more difficult to get a good result with these pens on water colour paper.

I am working with Arteza Real Brush Pens. These pens are affordable and easy to use. To colour the image, I used only five markers:

  • Flower Petals - Lilac, Violet

  • Leaves - Pale Green/Mint Green & Ice Blue/Turquoise

To paint the flower, individual petals were painted, starting at the base, with the Violet. The Lilac was introduced and, using a water brush pen filled with water, the colour was pulled out to create a gradient. The leaves were alternated between the two colour combinations listed. Each leaf was coloured section by section created by the veins. The darker colour was applied at the base and blended out with the lighter one. A water brush pen was not used.

The background was Copic coloured with B99, a beautiful deep royal blue and the panel trimmed to card front sized, 4" by 5 1/4". It was adhered to a gold foil paper matted A2 sized card base. The sentiment, Simon Says Stamp's You're So Kind, was die cut from card stock also coloured with B99, mounted on the gold paper and foam. Some dot detail was added to the flower petals with a white gel pen. Gold half pearls were used to embellish the card.
