Creating a One-Layer, Ink Blended Background with Stencilling

Hello everyone! It is release day at Picket Fence Studios! My first card features a gorgeous 6 by 6 stencil, Shadow of Leaves. This stencil is also available in a slim line format. The card illustrates a simple masking technique to create a combination ink blended/stencilled background. The result is a seamless look and this one-layer card is mail friendly!

Wild Peonies was stamped with Versamark ink on a panel of Bristol Smooth card stock and on masking paper. The image was embossed in white. When cutting out the image on the masking paper, it is trimmed just inside the stamped out line to avoid a 'white halo' after the ink blending.

The panel, with the image masked, was ink blended with Distress Oxide inks using Picket Fence Studio's Life Changing Blender Brushes. Starting on the right hand side and top of the panel, Black Soot followed with Villainous Potion and Hickory Smoke were applied. The left hand side, beginning in the centre of the panel on the floral edge, was inked with Shaded Lilac and Pumice Stone. With the mask still in place, the Shadow of Leaves Stencil was positioned over the left hand side of the panel and Snowdrop White Paper Glaze was applied with a Mixed Media Spatula. The mask was carefully removed. When the glaze dries, it takes on some of the colour from the ink blending for a soft and pretty effect.

The embossed image was coloured with Zig Real Brush markers to create a water colour look. The Bristol Smooth card stock can withstand a small amount of moisture without pilling or warping. It can be a bit of a challenge to see the image initially with the white embossing so I gave all of the peonies a quick colour in Light Pink first.

  • Leaves - Marine Green, Deep Violet

  • Peonies - Light Pink, Peach Pink

The panel was trimmed to card front size, 4" by 5 1/4" and mounted on a dark grey matted, A2 sized card base. The sentiment, Hugs, is from the Mini Slimline Full Front Shaker and was die cut four times out of the grey card stock and stacked. Clear sequins from the Sky Light Sequin Mix Plus finished off with Nuvo Crystal Drops Morning Dew complete the card.
