Shimmer Powder Backgrounds featuring Simon Says Stamp’s FILIGREE SNOWFLAKE Emboss & Cut

Updated: Jan 13, 2022

Hello everyone! it is absolutely freezing cold here and has been since before Christmas. The one good thing about the temperatures is that my Coonhound Annie doesn’t bother with her typical “I need to smell everything“ and gets right down to business! But even a few minutes outside, she is holding her paws up and we are rushing to get into the warmth. It is seriously cold here and so how about a night sky background to highlight Simon Says Stamp’s FILIGREE SNOWFLAKE Emboss & Cut?! Seems about right for my neck of the woods! Snowflakes are gorgeous … especially paper ones!

The backgrounds for these cards were created with Nuvo Shimmer Powders on Canson XL water colour paper. The powders contain mica and the beautiful sheen when the light catches the cards is hard to capture in a photo. Amazing! I used the following pigments:

  • Storm Cloud, Violet Brocade

  • Storm Cloud, Lilac Waterfall, Blue Blitz

The powders are applied to wet paper in a series of applications followed by spritzes of water to build up colour. A distress spray bottle gives some control over how much water is applied and a great tool for this technique. The panels need lots of drying time!

This embossing folder is very cool! Simon’s folders are ultra thick and the result are images with lots of fine detail that is deeply etched. The added dies in this folder, makes creating gorgeous snowflakes a one step deal! In a Big Shot embossing machine, the sandwich I use for best results is the platform and two pieces of card stock … no cutting plates! This will vary between machines but the folder should roll through with only a slight resistance. I am not sure if there is any difference in regard to how the folder I placed in the die cutter, but, out of habit, I had the cutting dies facing down on the platform.

When the panels were dry, the sentiments from Simon’s SNOW MUCH were embossed with silver embossing powder. They were protected with post it note tape and spattered with watered down white gouache. The panels were mounted on black foam before being adhered to black card stock measuring 5 3/8” by 4 1/8”. The card bases are A2 sized.

The snowflakes were embossed and cut from both white card stock and foam. Versamark was applied on the high points with a blending tool and heat embossed in silver. The snowflakes were mounted on the foam die cuts and adhered to the card.
