Resist Technique with Nuvo Shimmer Powders featuring Simon Says Stamp’s WINTER BIRDS

Hello everyone! Do you fall in love with a stamp set, buy it and then don’t use it? Or is it just me!!! I bought Simon Says Stamp’s Winter Birds last Christmas season and ran out of time to use it before the big day arrived. And I have to be honest … it takes me several months after the New Year before I feel that urge to start making Christmas cards. Thankfully I have a designated storage bin to place all the products I have not used. And yay! In a case you haven’t noticed, I am feeling the spirit of Christmas and, with a little break in my schedule, I went to the ‘ must make time to use’ bin and found this gem!

The background was created on Canson XL watercolour paper. The branches from Winter Birds were stamped with Versamark ink and embossed in white. A liberal amount of water was applied to the panels. Nuvo Shimmer Powders were lightly tapped on. I take my time building up the colour. The colour from the powder pigments are very saturated and too much applied at once can result in losing some of the pops of colour these two powder mixes offer. For the lavender panel, I used Violet Brocade and Atlantis Burst was used on the other one. I SPARINGLY added Storm Cloud. This is a black mix which was applied nearest to the branches to add depth. The panels were set aside to dry completely and then spattered with watered down white gouache.

The water colour panels were trimmed down to 4” by 5 1/4” and then die cut with Simon’s A2 Thin Frames; creating a frame and rectangle. Rather then using this die to cut a thin gold frame, I mounted the water paper frame on gold card stock that measured the same as the original panel. The rectangular panel was mounted on foam and centred on the gold card stock. The panels were mounted on coloured card stock; Simon's Blue Violet and Midnight Green, and adhered to A2 sized card bases.

The elements and sentiment were stamped on white card stock with Versamark and embossed in gold. The images were Copic coloured and fussy cut. The branches and birds were adhered with low profile foam squares. The sentiment was die cut with Simon's Sentiment Labels and mounted on foam. I finished up with lots of Nuvo Drops!

  • Black - birds' eyes

  • White - embellishments on the background

  • Morning Dew (clear) - red berries

  • White Blizzard (clear glitter) - ~berries in the backgrounD

  • Stone White Chalk - snow on the branches
