Stamp First, Ink Blend Later … an easy resist technique

Hello everyone! The timing of these wintry cards is perfect for my neck of woods! The snow accompanied by wind has transformed my neighbourhood into a winter wonderland … beautiful to look at but not so much fun to shovel! LOL!

Today’s mini slimline cards feature a fabulous layering stamp, BIRCH IMPRESSIONISM, by Altenew and one of my favourite Christmas sentiment sets, their HOLIDAY WISHES. These cards use a simple resist technique that allows the stamping to be done prior to the ink blending with no masking.

I did my stamping in a stamping platform but these layered stamps are easy to line up and perfection is not necessary. If you don’t use platform, you will need an acrylic block large enough to accommodate these tall stamps. The set comes with two different trees and four stamp layers for each one. I stamped trees in both the background and the foreground. For the trees in the backgroun, I laid down My Favourite Things’ Drifts and Hills stencil where the horizon would be and then stamped. The stencil was not used to stamp the trees in the foreground.

I chose to work with slow drying inks for this technique; Distress Oxides. The solid stamp, the first layer, was inked with Milled Lavender. The next three stamps were stamped with:

  • 2nd layer - pumice Stone

  • 3rd layer - Hickory Smoke

  • 4th layer - Shaded Lilac

After the trees, were stamped, they were embossed with clear embossing powder..

The stencil was lined up with the background trees and ink blended;

  • Scattered Straw, Dried Marigold, Peacock Feathers, Chipped Sapphire

  • Iced Spruce, Pumice Stone, Tumbled Glass

  • Wild Honey, Picked Raspberry, Black Soot

  • Spun Sugar, Seedless Preserves, Black Soot

The stencil was dropped down to the trees in the foregound and, using a dauber, a thin layer of ink was applied to the base of the trees. The sentiments were stamped with black Versafine ink. Using Spellbinders’ Mini Slimline Envelope and Card Creator, the ink blended panel was cut with the second largest die and black card with the largest one. The ink blended panel was mounted on foam and the black layer and adhered to a card base measuring 3 1/2” by 6 1/2”. The cards were embellished with clear sequins topped with Nuvo Crystal Drops Morning Dew.
