It’s All About Bees featuring JoyClair Designs’ EXTRAORDINARY

Hello everyone! I am excited to be a guest designer for JoyClair Designs. This gorgeous digital stamp set, EXTRAORDINARY, has a number of beautiful images and sentiments but I was drawn to the BEE. I used to be an avid gardener … I still am but on a much smaller scale …. and I fell in love with this gorgeous image! In fact so much so that I fussy all the bees! Yup! Not my original plan! My mat for the Scan n Cut needed to be replaced. I ordered a new one and was notified it would arrive in a couple of days so I threw the old one out …. BIG MISTAKE! The mat arrived when stated but I did not read carefully and ordered one for a different model. My machine would not recognize it. So I sharpened up my fussy cutting skills by cutting all the bees out!

WHAT’S THE SAME IN BOTH CARDS?

  • Both cards have ink blended backgrounnds on Bristol Smooth card stock using Distress Oxide inks, Tumbled Glass and Broken China. Tumbled Glass, the lighter blue was applied to the centre of the card and radiated outward with Broken China.

  • The bees were Copic coloured: Bee - Y11, 15, 18 Wings - BG0000, 000,01 Flowers - R81, 83 Leaves - G14

  • The panels were adhered to A2 sized, top folding card bases made from Neenah Classic Crest 110lb card stock.

  • The digital sentiments were mounted on foam.

The bee was printed on Bristol Smooth and cut out with a crafting knife before ink blending the panel. I covered the cut out opening in the panel from the back with Post It Note Tape to protect the more delicate areas while applying the ink. The panel was spattered with slightly watered down gouache. It was mounted on black sheet foam and the area trimmed away where the bee was cut out. The body of the bee was adhered to the card base through the opening. The wings were shaped and two stacked foam squares propped up the middle of the wing and one foam square on the tip. I find the adhesive on the foam is not strong enough and reinforced it with liquid glue. The wings were ‘painted’ with Nuvo Glitter Drops White blizzard and the card embellished with clear sequins topped with Nuvo Crystal Drops Morning Dew.

For this card, the ink blended panel was trimmed to A2 size and sprinkled with water droplets. Pinkfresh Studios’ Stitched Scallop Circles were die cut from white card stock. The smaller circle was mounted on foam. A wreath of bees was created by adhering them to the small circle ... wing tip to wing tip! Three small honey comb die cuts were tucked under the large circle. The card was finished off with one of two bees adhered by small foam squares in the middle of the wreath and the other on the honeycomb.
