Hello everyone! I hope all is well with you. I have had a turbulent week with the threat of a wildfire encroaching on the city where I live in the Okanagan Valley. My neighbourhood on the outskirts of town is on Evacuation Alert which means we have to be ready to leave in a moment's notice. My car is packed with the essentials including quite a number of my crafting supplies, stamps and dies. I figure if there is a possibility of being displaced, I will need something to keep my hands and mind busy! In the meantime, I continue to make cards to get through the days and am wearing down a path between my car in the garage and my craft room with every card I make! I am racking up quite a few 'steps' on my Fitbit! Silver linings!!!
Today's card features a wonderful stamp set by Simon Says Stamp, Be A Mermaid. It has fabulous images and super fun sentiments. I created a slimline card (yes, another one!!!) incorporating Pinkfresh Studio's Slim Ornate Banner die set to create layers.
The Background
I began this card with a die cut using the middle die from Slim Ornate Banner. The background was ink smooshed using Distress Oxide Inks Cracked Pistachio, Peacock Feathers, Shaded Lilac and Faded Jeans. Using a stamping block, I repeat stamped the wave with Versamark ink to cover the entire panel and embossed it in white. The stamp was staggered to avoid a uniform look. Some sections of the waves were painted with Winsor and Newton's white gouache paint. It was watered down so not to be completely opaque. The panel was spattered with the same paint using a fine water brush.
The Elements
The tails were stamped and embossed on Bristol Smooth card stock. One tail was painted with Shaded Lilac and Faded Jeans while the other was done with Cracked Pistachio and Peacock Feathers. The tails were fussy cut right up to the embossed line. Using a straight edge and a craft knife, slits were cut, slightly wider than the width of the tails, in the panel. The mermaid tails were inserted and held in place with white glue at the back of the panel. Foam square adhesives were placed under the fins to provide some lift.
Putting It Together
The panel was adhered to white sheet foam that had been cut using the middle die from the Slim Ornate Banner die set. Light blue card stock was die cut using the largest banner die and the foam backed panel was adhered to it. The now layered panel was mounted on a card base measuring 4" by 9".
The Sentiments and Finishing Touches
The sentiment 'positive mermaid vibes' was stamped with Versamark ink on light blue card stock. After the embossing powder was applied, the powder was brushed off the words 'positive' and 'vibes'. The word 'mermaid' was embossed in this way twice. The other two worlds were stamped with Versafine ink one word at a time. 'Mermaid' was masked with Post It Note Tape, one of the words inked, the mask removed and stamped. This sentiment was fussy cut, mounted on sheet foam and then the foam trimmed. Simon Says Stamp's Sending was die cut three times and stacked. This sentiment and the tails were painted with Nuvo Glitter Drops, White Blizzard. Iridescent sequins topped with Nuvo Crystal Drops, Morning Dew, finished off the card.
